Awards, Accolades & Awesomeness
NewGround Receives "Inter-Faith Leadership Award" From the Valley Inter-Faith Council
On May 6th, 2010, 300 community leaders and activists gathered at the Valley Interfaith Council's
annual awards dinner where NewGround was given the "Inter-Faith
Leadership Award." Respected for their great work in the community, VIC
audience members included a whole range of Los Angeles City Council
members, interfaith leaders, and congressional staffers.
Co-facilitators Malka Fenyvesi (PJA) and Aziza Hasan (MPAC) were introduced by the NewGround seed funder Suzy Marks. Rather than allow the skepticism of others defeat them, MPAC and PJA proceeded with their program, and celebrated their success at the awards dinner. The evening was a strong testament to the power of community and the importance of working together. Other recipients included Councilmember Greig Smith, Operation Gratitude, and James A. Thomas.
The Valley Interfaith Council supports critical services in the San Fernando Valley, including the delivery of 150,000 meals a year to home-bound individuals; three multi-purpose senior centers, eleven nutrition sites and in-home care assistance for seniors; working with victims of stroke and other illnesses and impairments at four adult day care centers; and free "Handyworker" service to help low income seniors and disabled persons make their homes more accessible. "Muslims and Jews working together, huh?"

Telling Our Stories with Story Corps
NewGround folks participated in a project called Story Corps,
where "over 50,000 people have shared life stories with family and
friends...Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is
preserved at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps
is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions
listen to our broadcasts on public radio and the web." The website telling NewGround's story can be found here.
